Foods Great Burger Challenge

WCHS students in Foods 20 and 30 occupied themselves for the first few weeks of May with the Great Burger Challenge. Students were tasked with creating a bun, a patty and a side or sauce. The 20 levels got to choose to make a patty out of veggie and poultry, and the 30 levels got their choice of veggie, poultry, and beef.

In preparation for the event Chef Adams had a guest speaker, Chef JP, from the ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen. He talked to students about maintaining a grill, how to best grill the veggie patties and making perfect grill lines. His colleagues at the ATCO office were kind enough to lend the students a grill for the day so the class could all grill at the same time. Students were asked to grill enough burgers for each member of their teams and two for judgment by the school teachers. The two burgers plated for judging were used to judge the taste and plating of the burger. The ones not eaten were used in an auction to the teachers who judged. The money raised from the auction went towards the food bank.

The Judges decided on one winner from each category. Winners from the veggie category were Gabby & Zahra, from the Beef category Asem & Jacob, and from poultry Rasveen. The five winners got to take home a “golden” spatula, though it was lacking the gold color because Chef Adams had wanted the spatula to be usable

Western Canada High School Races to End Hunger

WCHS students are gearing up for their annual Race to End Hunger fundraiser. Each year, a group of dedicated students, led by Mrs. Reierson, commit to raising money and non-perishable food items for the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank. They run special events such as student teacher dodgeball, concentration games, bake sales and class donation competitions.

CANstruction, our grand finale, happens on May 15 and brings together eight teams of 10-12 students who compete to build the best structure out of cans. During the competition, teams participate in games to earn special advantages that they can use during their build. Students work all morning to design and build their structure, and at noon a special assembly of judges select the winning team. Staff, students and the community gather on the front lawn to take part in the festivities. Ella Hornby, a Grade 10 student at WCHS, says, “Planning CANstruction has given me the capacity to give back to the community. It’s amazing to be part of this event.”

It is an amazing opportunity for WCHS to show off their creativity, innovation, and engineering skills.

Our 20 and 30 level Foods students, led by Ms. Tammy Adams, also participated this year by adding the Great Burger Challenge to the day. Students create gourmet beef, veggie, and chicken burgers that they hand-make. They auctioned off the burgers to the highest bidder. All proceeds are donated to the Food Bank. They were a huge success! Students who did not bid also had the opportunity to treat themselves to BBQ burgers for lunch.

All proceeds go to helping the Calgary Food Bank and allow us to highlight our care for all members of our community. Our goal is to raise over $5,000 for the Food Bank. The Leadership Committee is grateful for the opportunity to serve and learn about being productive members of our community. We thank everyone who participated and hope to see your support next year!

Western Band Program | 2019 B.C. Tour

From April 23rd to 28th 2019, students of the Western Canada High School Band Program participated on a Tour to Vancouver, Victoria, and Whistler. 176 of our Grade 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to engage in workshops at the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria. The workshops with Dr. Taylor at UBC and Dr. Capaldo at UVIC gave our students a tremendous opportunity to work with the very best in the field. While on tour, they also performed at the Cantando Festival in Whistler.

A huge congratulations to our Sr. Jazz Band, Grade 11 Symphonic Band, and Grade 12 Wind Ensemble! All three groups won Gold for their performances at the provincial festival and did Western proud.

We extend great thanks to the team of 13 teachers and parents that dedicated their time as supervisors to make this amazing opportunity available to our students!
